Pittsfield — It would be only fitting that a high school wrestling program with 40 years of lofty and cherished accomplishments would again be in a position to bring home postseason hardware, as Camden Hills has done — and hopes to do — this season.

The youthful Windjammers nailed down the program's 18th Eastern Class B title with another dominating performance Saturday, Feb. 2 at Maine Central Institute.

Camden Hills, along with Medomak Valley and Oceanside, two other Midcoast mat teams, will vie for state Class B championships on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 9:30 a.m. at the Augusta Civic Center.

The Windjammers, Panthers and Mariners will be well represented at the state meet after a bundle of area student-athletes qualified for the championships from the regional meet.

The top four wrestlers in each weight class from each regional meet advance to the state competition.

On Saturday, Camden Hills crowned four regional champions (Zach Annis, Connor Winchenbach, Coleman Powers, Jared Gilbert) and Medomak Valley (Cyril Miller) and Oceanside (Dallas Ball) both one.

Camden Hills qualified 12 student-athletes to the states, while Medomak Valley added four and Oceanside three.

The regional team scores were: Camden Hills 182, Belfast 138.5, Ellsworth 137.5, Caribou 99, Maine Central Institute 61, Medomak Valley 60, Mount Desert Island 44, Hermon 42, Oceanside 35 and Central of East Corinth 25.

The Midcoast state qualifiers included:

Camden Hills — Zach Annis (1st at 106 pounds), Connor Winchenbach (1st at 138), Coleman Powers (1st at 145), Jared Gilbert (1st at 170), John Underhill (2nd at 120), Chris Weiss (2nd at 126), James Archer (3rd at 113), Bryan Clement (3rd at 220), Calan Bragg (4th at 138), Eli Smith (4th at 152), Brian Jones (4th at 182) and Kaylo Littlejohn (4th at 285).

Medomak Valley — Cyril Miller (1st at 182), Owen Gilbert (2nd at 195), Rayanne Leach (4th at 106) and Riley McCollett (4th at 126)

Oceanside — Dallas Ball (1st at 113), Travis Stone (3rd at 195) and Dylan Look (3rd at 285).

The one local fifth-place finisher, and state alternate, is Camden Hills' Taylor Crosby (160).

Camden Hills again will be among the favorites to win the state crown because, well, they are talented, deep, well-coached and always in the mix for the state's most coveted mat title.

In the 40 years of the Windjammers program, which includes Camden Hills Regional High School and Camden-Rockport High School, the team has won 13 state Class B titles, 18 Eastern Class B crowns and 11 Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference overall championships (which includes both Class A and B schools). The squad also has been state runners-up seven times, regional runners-up three times and league runners-up four times.

The Windjammers are coming off being the top Class B squad in the league championship meet.

"This undefeated team is truly remarkable given the fact that of the 14 wrestlers who competed [at the KVACs], four were freshmen, including one girl, six sophomores, two juniors — one with only nine weeks of experience — and two seniors," said Windjammer coach Pat Kelly. "The average age of this talented squad is a mere 15 years."

The Windjammers also won the regional crown last year.
