Butler, Blakeley, Hurd prepare for state singles tourneyRound of 48 begins May 30 at Colby College
Waterville — Three top-tier high school tennis players from Knox and Waldo counties will look to experience net gains as the Maine Principals' Association state singles tournaments kick off on Friday, May 30 at Colby College.
Oceanside's Cameron Butler, Camden Hills' Abby Blakeley and Belfast's Mariah Hurd qualified for the event, with Butler and Blakeley earning seeds in their respective tournaments.
The qualifiers were held recently, with the Round of 48 set to begin at 8:30 a.m. Friday morning.
First among Midcoast players to hit the court with be the unseeded Hurd, who will face unseeded Emily Brookings of Bangor at 1:15 p.m. Friday.
Should Hurd advance, she will have a tough draw in the next round as she will face Maisie Silverman of Brunswick, the second overall seed and the 2012 state singles champion.
Blakeley, who is seeded seventh and competing in the tourney for the third straight year, will play at 4:30 p.m. Friday against the winner of the match between Eryn Doiron of Mount Blue and Laura Henny of Scarborough.
In the boys competition, Butler, who is the eighth seed and competing for the second straight year, will play at 1:30 p.m. against the winner of the match between Bryce Tetreault of North Yarmouth Academy and Brendan Cyr of Caribou.
Butler and Blakeley advanced to the Round of 16 last season.
Also of note, Isaac Salas of Waynflete, a former Camden area athlete, is the third seed in the tournament. Salas will face the winner of the match between Thomas Brent of Gorham and Ben Haslam of Ellsworth at 4:30 p.m.
The Round of 16 and the quarterfinals will be Saturday, May 31 at the same site, while the semifinal and championship matches will be played Monday, June 2 at Bates College in Lewiston.
