A DAY IN THE GARDENS AT THE BROOKS COMMUNITY PARK, SUNDAY, AUGUST 25TH A FREE, family-friendly day of hands-on gardening workshops; your choice to attend one, two, or all three. Potluck picnic is open to all!
10:00am to 12:00pm: Herbs for Food and Medicine Learn how to safely and effectively use many common herbs of Maine's gardens, fields, and forests, some of which may already be growing in your yard! We'll discuss the identification, harvest, and preparation of herbs we find on a walk through the park's fields and developing gardens, and participants will learn basic herb growing techniques in a hands-on gardening demonstration.
12:00pm to 1:00pm: Potluck Picnic Lunch Bring your favorite picnic dish or dessert to share!
1:30 to 2:30pm: Composting for Farm or Garden Composting can be a clean, easy, and effective way to transform your kitchen, yard, and garden waste into the very best (not to mention free!) plant food. In this hands-on workshop, participants will build a simple compost bin while discussing bin location, materials to compost, as well as the biology, micronutrients, and minerals necessary for great compost.
3:00pm to 5:00pm: Caring for your Fruit Trees In this hands-on, working tour of the developing Brooks Community Park Orchard, participants will learn how to care for a variety of fruit trees suited to our Waldo County climate. Topics of discussion will include species and variety selection for maximum fruit production, encouraging pollinators, mulching and feeding your trees, and more.

There will be a free family friendly concert on Tuesday August 27 at 6pm in the Brooks Community Park. The concert features the band The Leaky Boot Jug Band a local "garbage" band. Everyone is encouraged to bring a blanket or chairs and pack a picnic dinner and come on down and enjoy the music. The cook shack will be open and selling food too. event "Picnic in the Park" has been made possible in part by a grant by the Unity foundation.
