BRENDA HARRINGTON CROWNED VALENTINE QUEEN by PRECEPTOR BETA CHAPTER OF BETA SIGMA PHI SORORITY
In keeping with an age-old tradition, members of Beta Sigma Phi once again recently chose their Valentine Queen to represent them for the 2017 sorority year. The chapter votes on the member who best exemplifies their sorority as well as her contribution to her surrounding communities. We are honored to have Brenda Harrington as our new Preceptor Beta Valentine Queen. Brenda was also chosen by the Sorority’s international magazine, The Torch, as a member of the International Queen’s court.
In our opening ritual we pledge “to give the best that is in us to our Sorority”. Brenda did that when she stepped up to be our president in 2014 even though she was our newest member, joining our chapter in February, 2012. Brenda came to our sorority after she retired from her position as Assistant to City Manager/General Assistant Director at Rockland City Hall. She has brought a freshness and enthusiasm to the position which has been an inspiration to everyone. Brenda is a born leader. She is detailed in all that she does and does it with a smile on her face. Her communication skills have kept her “sisters” up to date on what is happening within our sorority, our own lives and our community. She is caring not only to her sorority sister, but also those seniors she has helped by delivering Meals on Wheels. She has added a little light to many lives.
To share a little background history of Brenda: She was born and raised in Thomaston and graduated from the old Thomaston High School. She worked as Secretary for the Owl’s Head School for 10 years while her three daughters were young. She then went to work for Mid Coast Mental Health for 6 ½ years as the supervisor of the outpatient department secretary staff. After that she was hired by then, Rockland City Manager, Cathy Sleeper, where she remained for almost 19 years, working for several more managers. She also was the city’s General Assistance Director. She has been on the board of Directors for Coastal Community Action, the Salvation Army and the Methodist Conference Home. After retirement, she delivered Meals on Wheels for over 3 years. Brenda has been a notary public for many years and enjoys performing weddings. To date she has performed almost 300 weddings, one to a co-editor of Country Living Magazine. A year and a half later she received a picture of the couple’s first born child, which was very special to her. Brenda says she loves staying busy. “Busy as a bee, that’s me”
Brenda was born in May, which is represented by the color green. Beta Sigma Phi’s definition of our green Flame is “that dear love of comrades, which displays itself not only to those who wear our badge, but extends itself in consideration and enjoyment to all fellow beings.” That describes Brenda and why she makes a worthy Valentine Queen for our chapter. We are so proud of you for all you have done.
