Bok plays spiritual conference concert

Castine — Singer, songwriter, composer and guitarist Gordon Bok of Camden will perform in concert to close this year’s Downeast Spiritual Life Conference Saturday, July 12, at 7:30 p.m. at Maine Maritime Academy. Tickets for Bok’s “Songs of the Sea” are $25; the concert is open to the public without conference registration.

The conference runs Friday and Saturday, July 11 and 12, and features the Rev. Dr. John Philip Newell addressing Rebirthing The Divine: the Spirit, The Earth and The Human Soul. It is hosted by the Spiritual Life and Learning Center of Blue Hill’s St. Francis By The Sea.

The conference is rich in music including group singing with conductor and composer George Emlen, who will teach the glory of the liturgical Celtic chant. Celtic harp music played by Camden harpist Mildred Crocker will accompany the special Sunday, July 13, worship service composed by poet and theologian Newell, who will serve as officiant and preacher. Using themes from the conference, this service called “Great Creating Spirit: A Celtic Earth Mass for the Celebration of Communion at 10 a.m. will take place on the campus of Maine Maritime Academy and is free and open to all.
