Boetsch to battle in UFC event at Cross Insurance CenterLincolnville native 'The Barbarian' to compete in middleweight bout Aug. 16
Bangor — The highly-touted and popular Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) will make its first trip to the Pine Tree State in August.
And with that will be the return of one of the state's own in former Camden-Rockport High School graduate and current UFC star Tim “The Barbarian” Boetsch.
Boetsch, a Lincolnville native who won four consecutive individual state Class B wrestling titles for the Windjammers and compiled a 147-7 record during that time before attending Lock Haven University in Pennsylvania on a mat scholarship, will be on the Saturday, Aug. 16 card at the Cross Insurance Center.
Boetsch (17-7) of Sunbury, Pa., ranked 13th in the middleweight division, will face Brad Tavares (12-3) of Las Vegas, Nev. and Kailua, Hawaii, who is ranked 14th in the same division.
The former Windjammer also was elected into the Maine Amateur Wrestling Alliance Hall of Fame in 2012.
“I’m so excited to finally bring the UFC to Maine,” said UFC president Dana White, who is a 1987 graduate of Hermon High School and a Bangor native. “People in Maine have been asking me to bring the UFC there for a long time, so we’re bringing a great card to Bangor on Aug. 16. I love Maine, I have a home and family there, and I’m really looking forward to this event.”
Boasting an impressive resume that dates back nearly a decade, Boetsch holds wins over C.B. Dollaway, Hector Lombard, and Yushin Okami. This August, “The Barbarian” takes on one of the division’s rising stars in Tavares. After making his debut on The Ultimate Fighter Season 11, Tavares quickly racked up seven UFC wins, including a five-fight unbeaten stretch, and he will return to the Octagon on Boetsch’s home turf with the intent to spoil his opponent’s homecoming.
Other fights on the card (subject to change) includes: Ryan “Darth” Bader (18-4) versus Ovince Saint Preux (16-5), Shawn “The Savage” Jordan (15-6) versus Jack “The Outlaw” May (7-1), Tom “Kong” Watson (16-7) versus Sam Alvey (22-5) and Thiago Tavares (22-5-1) versus Robbie “Problems” Peralta (18-4).
The event will start at 7 p.m. Tickets for the event went on sale on Friday, June 20.
Global Spectrum’s Joe Imbriaco, general manager of Cross Insurance Center, said, “We’re very pleased to formally announce this event for Bangor. UFC is going to bring a lot of exposure for the entire state with the event being broadcasted live on Fox Sports 1, and we’re happy to be a part of that.”
UFC Fight Night also will air live on FOX Sports 1, at 10 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 16, with the prelims kicking off the night on FOX Sports 2 at 8 p.m.
