Topsham — Three Midcoast schoolgirl tennis players competed in the Maine Principals' Association state singles Region 3 qualifier on Tuesday, May 20 at Mount Ararat High School, a scenario which saw two of the three players notch a win and one advance.

Camden Hills' Abby Blakeley and Katie Vannorsdall picked up wins, but it was Blakeley, a senior who was seeded third in the qualifier, who went 2-0 and advanced to the Round of 48, which will begin on Friday, May 30 at Colby College in Waterville.

Medomak Valley freshman Maggie Ryan also participated in the qualifier, though she ultimately lost a close match to Skowhegan's Cailee Manzer. The match was tied 8-8 and went to a tiebreaker, which Ryan lost 9-7, eliminating the Panther from the qualifer.

Blakeley breezed through her first match as she defeated Gardiner's Isabelle Ucci 8-1 in a pro-set match, which set up her match with Boothbay Region's Courtney Cheney.

Blakeley then earned a straight set win over Cheney, 6-1, 6-0, to advance.

Blakeley went unseeded as a junior and advanced to the Round of 16 and also competed in the event as a sophomore.

Vannorsdall, a sophomore, defeated Boothbay Region's MacKenzie Colby, 8-2, in a pro-set match, which set up Vannorsdall's match with Mount Ararat's Christine Leveque, the sixth overall seed in the qualifier.

Vannorsdall then was downed in straight sets by Leveque, 2-6, 0-6, which ended her run in the qualifier.

Blakeley returned to the Midcoast later in the day in time to help Camden Hills win its seventh match of the regular season in a 5-0 victory over Medomak Valley at Midcoast Recreation Center in Rockport. Blakeley won her pro-set match 8-1 against Panther Haley Mank.
