Bids due in two weeks for middle school expansion
Thomaston — Construction bids for adding a classroom wing to Oceanside Middle School in Thomaston will be opened April 4.
The construction schedule was discussed at the Regional School Unit 13 board meeting Thursday evening, March 16.
Voters approved Feb. 28 borrowing up to $23.2 million for school construction projects, including the classroom addition at the middle school. The school serves students from Rockland, Thomaston, Owls Head, South Thomaston and Cushing.
The middle school classroom addition is the top priority of the district so that sixth-graders can be accommodated at the regional middle school. Currently, sixth-graders spend their mornings at South School in Rockland and in the afternoons are bused to the middle school.
The addition will consist of six classrooms.
The project goes before the Thomaston Planning Board Tuesday, March 21, for final approval. Ground is expected to be broken late in the spring. The expected completion date is Aug. 15 in order to allow the rooms to be readied for students, who will arrive two weeks later.
The second phase of work at the middle school will be to build a new cafeteria and kitchen and then renovate the existing eating area into more classrooms.
At Oceanside High School in Rockland, there will also be a new, expanded cafeteria and kitchen. The administrative offices will be moved to space between the new kitchen and the auditorium. This will create a new main public entrance there.
The existing administrative space will be converted into classrooms.
Additional bathrooms will be added and renovations will be made to the lower level, where locker rooms are located. An elevator will be installed. A sprinkler system will also be installed in the school.
There is no timetable on construction of the new elementary school that will serve pre-kindergarten through fifth-graders largely from Owls Head and South Thomaston. The new two-story school will be located on the grounds of the current Owls Head Central School. The new building will be situated on a grassy area to the north of the existing school.
