Benefit planned to honor child killed in car crash
Port Clyde — The Port Clyde community is coming together to host a benefit to honor nine-year-old Dylan Gold, who was killed in a car crash Aug. 11 in the village.
Amy Barstow, owner and office manager of Monhegan Boat Line, said she is expecting a large turnout for Rock the Dock, and added that although the boat line is the host, the event is a community inspired and supported event.
"Port Clyde is a small community with a big heart," she said.
The event is planned for Saturday, Oct. 19, at 2 p.m. Proceeds will fund the St. George Ambulance and LifeFlight of Maine, she said.
Barstow said Gold's family is aware of the event, although they will not be able to attend. She said she has been in contact with Dylan's mother, Alison, who was also injured in the crash.
"They have been wonderful, so thankful and supportive," she said of the Cohasset, Mass. family. "They are really incredible."
Karan Cushman and her husband, Gerry, of Port Clyde, are tasked with getting lobsters donated for the event. Cushman said the event is a way to tell the family that the community cares about them.
Cushman lives near the village and said her father was one of the first people on scene following the August crash that injured three people, and killed Gold.
"We have young kids, and the accident really hit home for us. We just feel so horrible for the family." she said. "Times like this make you think about what's really important."
Cushman said she hopes the event will educate people more about LifeFlight and its importance to smaller, more remote communities, like Port Clyde.
"Now we just have our fingers crossed for good weather," Barstow said.
