Events set for Nov. 10 in Waldoboro, Nov. 11 in Rockland
By Staff | Oct 30, 2012

There will be a pair of benefit coed softball tournaments in November to raise money for a Midcoast resident trying to make a recovery from a recent fall and head injury.

The events will raise money for 40-year-old Steve Nason of Union, who has played in the Camden-Rockport Adult Coed Softball League and plays in the Waldoboro Adult Coed Softball League and plays and coaches in the Rockland Men's Softball League.

The first tournament will take place on Saturday, Nov. 10 in Waldoboro and will use three fields — the Medomak Valley High School and Medomak Middle School softball fields, along with the John Foster Little League Field.

The second tournament will take place on Sunday, Nov. 11 in Rockland and also will use three fields — the Rockland Elks League Field, the Jaycee Park Field on Old County Road and Kenniston Field in the Jaycee Park facility.

Lee Smith, Elizabeth Wedge and Lenny Wedge are the organizers of the Waldoboro tournament, while Greg Knight and Graham Leavitt are organizing the Rockland tournament. The rain date for the Rockland tournament is Sunday, Nov. 17, while the Waldoboro tournament has no rain date.

Knight said Nason recently fell at his home, hit his head and has been in the hospital in intensive care since. Knight said, with the uncertainty of Nason's condition, and "between the efforts of his teammates, coaches and directors of the local leagues, we are going to try to raise some money for his family through a sport the guy loved — softball."

Both tournaments begin at 8 a.m. and have no restrictions on players.

The team entry fees for both tournaments will be $100, with donations accepted. All proceeds will go to Nason's family.

Nason has a fiancee, Christy Roman. Nason and Roman have four children.
