Belief in Future Viability of Unity College Leads Family to Donate $200K
Unity, Maine – July, 2014 – Less than five years removed from receiving a $10 million donation, Unity College continues to attract broad support from new and old friends alike.
Whatever their personal reasons for giving and goals for specific donations to Unity, donors share a common understanding that the environmental college founded less than 50 years ago will flourish in perpetuity if it continues to receive strong support. The $10 million donation has provided donors with the security of knowing that they are investing in a winning enterprise that is here for the long term.
The latter concept frames a $200K donation recently received by Unity College from a family that wish to remain anonymous.
Family members have been familiar with the College since its early days.
The donors have been impressed with the strength of Unity College’s academic programs, campus improvements, and strong commitment to a leading-edge environmental mission that is training students to address the most pressing ecological
problems of the 21st century.
“On behalf of the Unity College community, I would like to express our profound thanks and promise that our vibrant enterprise will continue to strive each day for excellence,” noted President Stephen Mulkey. “Our clarity of vision and purpose appealed to this family of donors. They have a particular interest in the sciences, which are flourishing at every level here.”
An internationally known scientist, Mulkey has personally overseen the expansion of academic programming, hiring of top-flight faculty and completion of campus upgrades to ensure that Unity is well-positioned to support the highest levels of teaching, scholarship, and research.
Dr. Melik Peter Khoury, Executive Vice President and Liaison to the Board, oversees development efforts and has engaged in detailed conversations with donors and potential donors alike. He has seen a rising national and international tide of interest in the College from individuals and groups.
“What they share is an affinity for the singular character and vision of the College,” Khoury says. He adds “they believe the college will flourish in perpetuity, and that a gift to Unity College is an investment in the sustainability of the planet.”
Martha Nordstrom, Major Gifts Officer, says the family share the values that the College holds dear and understand the good that their donation will do.
“Unity College is true to itself and that is something these donors find to be very appealing,” Nordstrom said. “We are a college that is very focused on its mission and our supporters understand us very well. In a world that is complex and frequently confusing, donors find the clarity of our purpose to be both refreshing and inspirational.”
In recent years, Unity College has gained international attention for a variety of achievements including: its academic programming focus on sustainability science, the College’s emphasis on experiential learning to complement strong classroom teaching, its involvement in leading-edge 21st century ecological problem solving and the worldwide recognition that the College has achieved in being the leader in the fight for global climate change mitigation. Ground breaking “green” innovations, such as the award-winning TerraHaus, brought international distinction to the College. Unity College’s TerraHaus is the first student residence on a college or university campus built to the Passive House standard, which is the most energy efficient building standard in the world.
Starting in 2007,Unity College made a dramatic statement by becoming the first in the United States to divest from investments in fossil fuels, thereby igniting a growing national movement in higher education to ensure the sustainability of the planet.
Through the framework of sustainability science, Unity College provides a liberal arts education that emphasizes the environment and natural resources. Through experiential and collaborative learning, our graduates emerge as responsible citizens, environmental stewards and visionary leaders.
