Camden — Rick and Regina Pierson said the decision to move their 5-year-old business Beach Inspirations from Lincolnville to Camden's Bay View Street "just sort of happened."

The Piersons said they saw the "for rent" sign in the window of the 47 Bay View St. site following a trip to nearby The Owl & Turtle Bookshop, “and that was it."

“We don’t over-think [things]," Regina Pierson said. "Because if we do, we won’t do it.”

The Piersons signed a lease a few days later and Beach Inspirations reopened in its new location Jan. 30.

“It just fell into place," Pierson said Feb. 18. "It’s not anything that we worked out, it just sort of happened.”

The Piersons, who 18 years ago moved to the Midcoast from Cape Cod, Mass., described themselves as "impetuous" and "very impulsive," which they said has served them well in past business ventures.

In addition to renovating and reselling houses, the Piersons recounted opening an ice cream shop across from a baseball field in Cape Cod, which they said was a successful business from their Memorial Day opening.

“All summer long, you couldn’t get in the place,” Rick Pierson said.

According to the Piersons, the ice cream business sold for three times what they paid before Labor Day of the same year.

Beach Inspirations, Regina said, had an equally spontaneous inception. After querying Claire Murray — a hand-hooked rug specialist based in Nantucket — about becoming a licensed vendor of Murray's goods, the Piersons received an affirmative response just two days later.

“So we go, ‘Oh, um, don’t have a storefront yet,’ so then we found a place in Lincolnville Beach,” Pierson said. “We just did it. That’s what I mean — it just happened. So it worked out good for us.”

The Piersons said while winters in Midcoast Maine are the slow season for tourism, they anticipate more year-round business as a result of moving to Bay View Street.

“Some days we wouldn’t see a person,” Pierson said of the store's previous location, adding that there is “wonderful activity” in Camden year-round. “You kind of have to be where the action is. So I think that’s why we did it.”

Since their Jan. 30 opening, the couple said they have been "tweaking" the store's layout, rearranging items such as batik scarves, reusable bags, candles and pine-filled pillows.

Although some of their merchandise is sourced from out-of-state or overseas, Pierson said Beach Inspirations' products “[keep] changing, because a lot of it’s from Maine, so it’s whomever comes through the door and makes stuff for us.”

As the store's only employees, the Piersons said they alternate days tending the shop, which they described as a “cozy spot, which we really love.”

Looking ahead to the summer of 2013, the couple is optimistic local foot traffic will make the business "more exciting."

“Clips of conversation, all this stuff that’s going on, people excited about their boats in the water, excited about going over to The Waterfront [restaurant]," Pierson said. "Just the excitement, I think that’s what I’m looking forward to, the excitement of Camden. It’s a beautiful place. It’s gotta be good, because it’s Bay View Street, right?”

Pierson said she hopes loyal customers that have patronized Beach Inspirations for the past five years in Lincolnville will have an easy time locating the business at its new address.

“We’re going to keep on going, because it’s exciting, it keeps you going. It gets you up in the morning,” Pierson said. “We hope for good things and we hope to be here for a good long time."

Beach Inspirations — reachable at 236-3222 — is open during the winter from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. The store also maintains a web presence on social media site Facebook.
