Barn Buddies available from animal shelter
Our pet pick of the week is actually a group of cats at the shelter we call Barn Buddies. These are cats that are not suitable to be house pets for a variety of reasons. There are the obvious ones, the feral cats whose wild nature and unsociability make them undesirable companion animals. Or the cats who think the bathroom sink is an acceptable alternative to a litter box. We also have cats who are shy or fearful of people, who only prefer the company of other cats and animals. Languishing in the shelter is no life for them.
They may not be appropriate as a pet but we will offer them a second chance through our Barn Buddy Program. If you have a working barn or safe, heated outbuilding, there are cats who need you. By providing a safe shelter and daily food and water you can help these cats have a permanent home; in turn, they can help you by keeping the rodent population down. Barn Buddies are available for no fee and are spayed/neutered and vaccinated before being placed. Cobalt, Bella Donna and Jade are three of our more friendly Barn Buddies available for adoption. Now is the best time to get your new barn buddy acclimated to their new home before the weather changes. Visit the shelter to learn more.
Our Whisker Walk and Family Fun Day at Harbor Park is just around the corner on Sept. 15 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. All are welcome. We have a full day of fun things planned for "Fido" and the whole family: agility course and demo, vendors, rescue groups, a pet communicator, live music, great food, kids' arts and crafts, and a bouncy house plus a whole lot more. It’s not too late to ask friends, family, neighbors and co-workers to support you in supporting the animals with a pledge in our dog walk. To learn more visit www.hskcme.org or the shelter.
Wish list: Dish liquid, large garbage bags, canned cat food, surgical gloves, paper towels, hot dogs and string cheese.
