Bail set for woman accused of choking child
Rockland — A 29-year-old Vinalhaven woman was arrested last week after police say she choked a 5-year-old girl.
Katie L. Leach appeared in court for arraignment Jan. 17 and had bail set at $1,000 cash. Leach was arrested and charged with domestic violence assault.
A police report filed in Sixth District Court in Rockland said the victim told an adult at school she had been choked and screamed at. The victim also displayed a red mark on her neck.
When interviewed by officers from the Knox County Sheriff's Office, the victim said she did not know why she was choked, and that she could not breathe during the assault. She demonstrated to police what happened by putting her own hands to her throat and then pretending to gasp for air, said court documents.
Personnel from the Department of Health and Human Services Department was also in attendance during the interview.
When Leach was arrested by police, she told officers the child exaggerates and denied the assault took place, said court papers. In custody, Leach admitted to lifting the child up by the waist, but continued to deny choking her.
Leach is scheduled to appear in court again March 26.
