Asleep at the Wheel wakes up Midcoast
Rockland — Iconic Western swing band Asleep at the Wheel will appear live on the Strand Theatre stage Saturday, Sept. 13, at 7:30 p.m. THIS CONCERT HAS SOLD OUT.
Asleep at the Wheel has spent more than 40 years honing its energetic, evolving, crowd-pleasing sound. Typically featuring eight to 11 musicians, the group has gone through myriad personnel changes (more than 80 members to date), but 6-foot-7-inch frontman Ray Benson (guitar, vocals) has held it together for four decades. Other current band members are Dave Sanger (drums), Dave Miller (bass, vocals), Eddie Rivers (steel guitar, saxophone), Katie Holmes (fiddle, vocals) and Emily Gimble (piano, vocals).
Now based in Austin, Texas, Asleep at the Wheel has won nine Grammy Awards for its country, Western swing, honky tonk and Texas country music. It has been a leading force in keeping the sound of Western swing alive by preserving classic sounds that had nearly disappeared from country music, and updating the music to keep it a living, breathing art form.
Tickets are $35 in advance and will be $40 day of show, general admission. The Strand balcony and lobby bars will be open for those age 21 and older with a valid ID. The theater is located downtown at 345 Main St. For more information on all upcoming live concerts, films, HD broadcasts and events at the Strand, visit rocklandstrand.com; call 594-0070, ext. 3; or email email@example.com.
