Appleton Historical Society News
The March meeting of Appleton Historical Society will be Monday, March 4, at 7 p.m., at Appleton Library. The business portion of the meeting will begin at 7 p.m, and the evening's program by 7:30 p.m.
The evening's program will be a talk by Thomaston author Blaikie Hines: Appleton at the Battle of First Bull Run, July 21, 1861. Volunteers from Appleton and the other towns of Knox County fought at the first great land battle of the Civil War at Manassas, Va., 30 miles west of Washington, D.C. Hines will speak of the Knox County soldiers who were there and their fate. Hines' newest book is "The Battle of First Bull Run - Manassas Campaign July 16-22, 1861 - An Illustrated Atlas and Battlefield Guide." It is the only illustrated atlas and battlefield guide book for the first battle of the American Civil War. Hines will be available to sign books before and after his talk.
Light refreshment will be served after the evening's program. Remind a friend, bring a neighbor!

As we begin to count down the days until the first day of spring, Appleton Library will host a 4-week series of demonstrations on Saturday mornings winding down with a simple celebration of the first day of spring on Wednesday, March 20. The library is open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday, weather permitting.

The Appleton Ridge Rug Hookers will demonstrated their timeless craft of hooking rugs Feb. 23 in the meeting room. A large collection of their beautiful work is presently on display in the main library.
March 2, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. — Learn how to use your Kindle faster and smarter, and find out how to download free e-books from the Maine Infonet! Bring along your own Kindle or stop by to learn more about this great reading device!
March 9, 10:30 a.m to 12:30 p.m. — With the generous support from the Maine Cancer Consortium, Food for Life instructor Mimi McGee will provide valuable, life-saving nutrition information with a cooking demonstration and tips on how to gain control of your health through simple tips in the kitchen. Please call the library to register, 785-5656; space is limited.
March 16, 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. — Appleton teen Ben McKenna will provide a visual presentation and demonstration which will highlight his passion for Longboarding.
March 20, 5 to 6 p.m. — Happy First Day of Spring!! Stop by for some light pre-dinner refreshments, visit with your neighbors, and enjoy our beautiful Appleton Library.
Daisy/Brownie Girl Scout Troop
There will be an informational meeting of the new Daisy/Brownie Girls Scout Troop on Feb. 28 at 6 p.m. at Appleton Village School. For more information, please call Amanda Gurney at 322-2554. The group is for girls in kindergarten through third-grade.
It’s not that often that I am able to go to a community benefit supper. I usually don’t remember until it’s too late. I was able to go to the benefit supper for Steve Billiat the other night, and it was such a blessing to me. There were more than 100 people there, definitely closer to 200. They all came out to support a member of our community. I just wanted to thank everyone that was involved in the supper, from setting up, to cooking, cleaning up, planning, organizing, donating items, bidding on items, and for attending the supper. Thank you! I am sure the support means a lot to the family!
