Appleton Library News
Appleton Library is seeking a part-time (10 hours per week) Library Coordinator to work with the Board of Trustees and volunteers to supervise programs and services at the Appleton Library. We are seeking a professional who is well organized, can communicate with a variety of people and has excellent computer skills. The candidate will need to supervise a staff of volunteers, maintain records and submit reports, write grants and catalog books, update the website, and plan events and programming. There will be no school Friday, March 14, due to a teacher’s workshop.
The next School Committee meeting will be March 17 at 6 p.m. in the AVS Library. All are welcome to attend these meetings.
On February 12, seven students from five area schools competed in the Knox County Spelling Bee in Rockland. Our school champion, Sophie Dorsky, and our school runner-up, August Gray, represented AVS. Congratulations to both of you on your accomplishments. August will continue on to compete in the Maine State Bee at 2 p.m. on March 22 at Hannaford Hall on the USM Portland campus. We are proud of both of you!
On Thursday, March 27, at 6:30 p.m., we will have our "Music in Our Schools Month" concert. Presenting students will be: Third-grade students playing recorders, fourth-graders playing keyboards, fifth-grade and middle school students playing their band instruments. Please plan to come enjoy the music and support these students.
On Saturday, March 15, local singer/songwriter Ellen Tipper will play a benefit concert at Sweet Tree Arts in Hope (next to the Hope General Store) to support the eighth-grade class trip (all proceeds will go to the class). She’ll be joined by Hologram, a student band from AVS featuring Lexi Smith, Fiona Smith and Ben Owre. Also performing will be eighth-grade singers Annalee Carrol , Sophie Dorsky and Natalie Owre. Five-Town Little League
Registration is now open for Five-Town Little League. Camden, Rockport, Hope, Appleton and Lincolnville are now Five-Town Little League. Please visit our website; http//:crll.sportsoffice.com to register your child for baseball, softball, or tee-ball teams. The website will give you important information regarding, March clinics, league information, and how to register. Don't wait too long. Clinics for majors begin next week, and you need to be registered to join. Registration ends March 22 for majors and April 1 for minors/tee-ball. Appleton residents will receive a full scholarship for registration fees. Please select "scholarship" when registering....thanks to the Jeff Landwehr Memorial. Pen Bay Lacrosse
Sign-ups are now open for the spring lacrosse program at the YMCA. The program is for players in grades 2 through 4 (grade 2 at coaches discretion) and runs from late April (as soon as the fields are ready) through mid-June. There are girls and boys teams and all abilities are welcome to try this great sport.
YMCA Summer Camp
Registration is now open for the YMCA Summer camp programs. Camps are available for campers ages 5 through 14 throughout the summer. Call 236-3375 for more information.
Five Town Communities That Care
Five Town Communities That Care is seeking caring adults who enjoy working with middle school students in a one-to-one mentoring/tutoring capacity in math or literacy. Math and Literacy mentors work in the public schools in Appleton, Camden, Hope and Lincolnville. Mentors and mentees meet after school twice a week throughout the school year. During each of the two, one-hour sessions, approximately fifteen minutes is devoted to mentoring the student to promote increased commitment to school, and the remainder of the hour is used to teach basic skills in math or literacy. The initial two-hour mentor training session and the two, one-hour mentoring/tutoring sessions per week, pay a $20 per hour stipend.
