Annual Runquist show at Ocean View

“Near Swim Beach” is an oil on linen by Björn Runquist.

Martinsville — Björn Runquist will have his annual “open studio” show Friday through Sunday, Aug. 8 through 10, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily at the Ocean View Grange, 435 Port Clyde Road/Route 131. The public also is invited to a reception Friday from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

Runquist’s annual exhibition generally showcases not just the gorgeous landscape of Maine in its coastal beauty, but also the beauty of mundane scenes of everyday life, from sun rises and boats at work to trucks parked in front of familiar stores. His painting covers a wide range of subjects including travels here and abroad. This year’s show explores in part his response to retirement from teaching and his first full winter in Maine.

“Each morning was a gift! — no alarm clock, no meetings, no obligation be somewhere else. If it’s snowing and you don’t have to drive to work you just put another log on the fire. I’m probably the only person in Maine who loved this past winter,” Runquist said.

Runquist, whose work also can be seen currently at Landing Gallery in Rockland, is represented by Horton Hayes Fine Art in Charleston, S.C., and had work in the Center for Maine Contemporary Art’s annual benefit auction in Northport. His paintings are in numerous private and corporate collections, including the Farnsworth Art Museum, and he was highlighted in the “Canvas” section of Maine Home and Design. His work has been included in the State Department’s Art in Embassies program for the last nine years.
