Tenants Harbor — Anne Miller, 64, died peacefully at her daughter’s home Monday, July 14, 2014.
Born in Red Bank, N.J., June 5, 1950, she was the daughter of Anne W. and Carlton (Red) Miller. After a year in New Jersey, the family moved temporarily to South Portland. The family settled on Paddy Creek Road in Cape Porpoise soon after that. Anne attended local schools throughout grade school. She attended South Portland High School, graduating with the Class of 1968.
Anne spent many summers during school working at the Shawmut Inn in Kennebunkport. She eventually chose to attend Westbrook College, obtaining a degree in nursing. She was employed as a registered nurse at York Hospital soon thereafter. Anne was eager to learn and attributed much of her vast medical knowledge to her experiences while at York Hospital. She said that the doctors she worked with were very generous with their time and willing to teach.
In 1979, Anne left York Hospital and moved to Tenants Harbor. At that time, she joined the medical staff at Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport. She worked in the Special Care Unit and she became a respected supervisor. Many of her former peers cite her natural leadership abilities as well as her exceptional level of skill. Anne was a welcome sight for those seeking medical help as her calm nature and sense of humor put people at ease.
For many years, Anne also worked with St. George Fire and Rescue. She was an EMT and Paramedic Instructor. She was passionate about teaching others and sharing her knowledge.
Anne left Pen Bay Medical Center to become a school nurse for RSU 13. She thoroughly enjoyed working with the school children. She also spent many summers lobstering on the FV Rocket with her father, Red. When she wasn’t lobstering, she was most likely on the deck of the Cod End helping her mother, Anne. She was always a helpful person and would often step in wherever she was needed.
Anne also enjoyed her family. She was a talented craftsperson, avid gardener, knitter, and cook and was always willing to share her considerable expertise.
Anne was predeceased by her mother, Anne Whitehouse Miller in 2007; her father, Carlton "Red" Miller in 2011; and a brother, John V. "Jud" Miller in 1975. She is survived by her daughter, Stephany Miller of Waldoboro; her siblings and spouses, Dan W. Miller, Peter and Ruth Miller, Susan Miller, Hale Miller and Joan Small, Tad and Julie Miller — all of Tenants Harbor; Heidi and John Michaels of Westbrook and Sky and Barry Ryan of Durham, N.H.; her grandchildren, Zachary Miller of Tenants Harbor, Ian and Emma Kavan of Waldoboro. She also enjoyed her many nieces and nephews: Jennifer, Jake, Jed and Meghan Miller, Joshua and Clint Miller, Annika and Danya Michaels, Eli Miller, Mallary and Blake Miller, Kiera and Keely Ryan, along with extended family.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, July 27, at 11 a.m. on the deck of the Cod End Market, 12 Commercial St., Tenants Harbor.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation fund will be announced at a later date.
