Rockland — Amato's is back in Rockland.

An Amato's food truck began serving this week at Buoy Park next to the middle pier.

The owner is Omar Hadjaissa of Richmond, who also operates the Amato's in Augusta.

Hadjaissa said Wednesday, May 10 he had many people from the Rockland area stop at the Augusta shop and say how they wished Amato's would be here.

There was an Amato's shop on Park Street from 2006 through March 2013.

Hadjaissa said he researched and decided to open the food truck. He said if it goes as well as he expects during the first two years, he will look for a bricks-and-mortar location.

The food wagon will be open seven days a week. The hours through May 31 will be 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. Beginning June 1, the restaurant will stay open to at least 8 p.m. and maybe 9 p.m.

Amato's is the only food truck that has applied this year to be located down on the city-owned waterfront. Vendors pay $3,000 a year to rent the space. During the summer festivals, they can remain if they pay the vendor fees to the festival organizers. If any of the festivals require the vendors to move from their current location, the festival organizers must reimburse the city-approved vendors $400.

The approval given to vendors using the city property allows them to operate through Sept. 30.

Last year, there were two food vendors on the city-owned waterfront -- 'Wich Please and a taco truck. Harbor Master Matt Ripley said that three vendors are allowed on the site and only one has applied thus far.

Thank you Dale for pointing out that error. The wagon will stay open until Sept. 30.

Mr. Betts

If they are allowed to stay until Sept. 31st, they will never have to leave as Sept. 31st will never come.
