VINALHAVEN — Alton F. “Sonny” Oakes Jr., 87, passed away July 13, 2012, after a long illness.
Sonny was born Jan. 5, 1925, in Vinalhaven, the son of Alton and Agnes (Conway) Oakes. He graduated from Vinalhaven High School in 1943. Upon graduating, he enlisted in the Naval Air Force and served in World War II for the next three years.
When returning to Vinalhaven, Sonny worked as a manager at the B&M Plant. When the plant closed he decided to take over management of the Depositor’s Trust Co. Bank. He attended the New England School of Banking and began his new career in 1965. He retired in 1991 as a vice president of Key Bank.
Mr. Oakes served on many island committees including the Board of Selectmen, Fox Island Electric Board and the Island Community Medical Center Board. He was a lifetime member of the Vinalhaven Lions Club, the Moses Webster Masonic Lodge and the Vinalhaven Legion.
Alton is survived by his wife of 62 years, Cynthia Tupper Oakes; his children, Russell, Karen, and Jill and her husband, Alan Koenig; two grandchildren, Joseph and Whitney Pratt; a sister and brother-in-law, Marion and Richard Swears; three nephews, several nieces, nephews and many cousins.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 24 at the Union Church in Vinalhaven. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in Sonny’s memory be made to either Island Community Medical Center, 15 Medical Center Loop, or Vinalhaven Emergency Medical Service, P.O. Box 815, Vinalhaven, ME 04863.
