Algorithm’s amalgam returns to Rock City
Rockland — City-based electronic/ambient trio Algorithm will return to Rock City Cafe, 316 Main St., Friday, Sept. 6. The Velvet Lunge series concert will run from 7 to 9 p.m.; there is no cover charge, but tipping the musicians is always encouraged.
Algorithm is comprised of Jacob Fricke, spoken word; Mike Whitehead, trumpet and flugelhorn; and Tom Luther, keyboards and laptop. The basic form of the group is supplemented by substantial use of electronic instruments, both live and sequenced. Luther and Whitehead are experienced jazz performers who use their improvising skills in the context of modern electronica and ambient music, providing a vehicle for Fricke's formidable reading style and acting background.
Luther describes the group as a true amalgam, saying the idea of playing along with recorded material goes back to the early electronic music of the French musique concrete, “while our sound is really more related to the work of Brian Eno and Jon Hassell in the 1970s.”
The creative process is one that is ever evolving for the trio, as concepts for performances can change from night to night. Often times, the group will go over notes from its last performance, which sometimes can lead to a re-interpretation or even re-structuring of a composition, said Fricke. Algorithm combines the fixed electronic backgrounds with live mixing and improvisation to makes each infinitely variable.
"It can get a little dicey managing the live performance with the manipulation of the technology, but it really adds a potent element to our performances," said Luther, "and we will be celebrating that little quirk with the premiere of a new work of ours that grew from Jacob's 'Technology Poem'.”
In addition to coffee and desserts, cocktails, beer, wine and dinner are available during the concert. For more information, call 594-4123. Both Rock City and Algorithm have Facebook pages.
