Mike grew up in western Massachusetts and graduated from Hartwick College with a B.A. in philosophy. His earlier years involved both corporate restaurant management and restaurant ownership. Together with his wife Kate, Mike owns Bricks Restaurant in Rockland.

Mike is the Director of a steel drum band whose proceeds are donated to area school music programs. He is a director for the Maine Lobster Festival and portrays King Neptune for the event. He has been Man-of-the-Month with Rockland's Share the Pride Committee and was awarded the Community Spirit Award in 2005 by the Rockland Thomaston Chamber of Commerce.
