Camden-Rockport Middle School unveils mural
Camden — One wall of the cafeteria at Camden-Rockport Middle School is now decorated with a 20-foot-by-5-foot mosaic glass-tile mural.
The mural, which was a school year-long project, was unveiled during the Celebration of the Arts night at the school June 14.
The piece is an abstract representation of Camden Harbor, which shows Curtis Island and the tower on Mt. Battie. It is inspired by the work of local artist Eric Hopkins. Hopkins attended the unveiling.
The project, which was in cooperation with Youth Arts, involved about 200 students, and the math classes estimated 47,000 tiles were used in the mural.
Michelle Orne, a volunteer with Youth Arts, thanked Mike Roy of Phi Home Designs for his help working on the boards when they warped and Gartley and Dorsky for making the installation safe.
The 2011-2012 school year will be "the year of print making," Orne said.
The Celebration of the Arts night featured artwork from the middle schoolers displayed throughout the school.
