Riley School offers 8th Year College for Kids Summer Workshops

Riley College for Kids features in-depth FUN workshops where children ages 6 to 15 can explore and experience a wide variety of the arts and science, taught by professionals specializing in their chosen field. This summers offerings include: Two Sessions – Session One runs June 21-July 1 and Session Two runs July 5 -15. Monday – Thursday, 9:00 to 3:00. Children can choose two of the six workshops offered per session –  participating in one in the morning and the other in the afternoon, thus allowing plenty of time for creativity and exploration.

Workshops and Leaders include:

•Pottery: Nancy Nelson, Mudstar Studios. – Many styles of pottery will be introduced: wheel, slab rolling, hand building, coil, different techniques for glazing and stamping. An emphasis on creative expression –beginning stages through advanced. Children love to get their hands dirty, feel the clay between their fingers while they create their “one of a kind” clay creations. Polymer clay and cement stamping and decorating will also be introduced.

•Film Making: Deb Vendetti, Morning Sky Studios - Filmmaking supports children to collaborate to create their own script with all the elements, story, plot, characters, acting, filming, sound, directing and editing. Children will learn how to operate a digital video camera for filming, frame a story, edit their film using I Movie, create and add music using Garageband- culminating in a “Movie Debut.”

•Digital Photography, Deb Vendetti, Morning Sky Studios - Children will learn to operate a digital camera, take pictures and than rework those images in Photoshop creatively and esthetically. Children will also learn to make a “Strappo” print (hand printing – monotype technique) and incorporate it into a print.

•Visual Art: Artist/Teacher/Book Illustrator - Stephen Metcalfe - Children will expand their artistic palette in areas they chose to develop. Explore different mediums and techniques such as water color pencils used in cartooning and book illustrating which are two of Stephen’s many talents as an artist. Masterpieces will be created!

•Environmental Science: Natural Scientist - Ed Dame - Geared to the ages and interest of children the Cove, pond, fields, and woods offer a wondrous world of exciting exploration. Science enthusiast will make discoveries, prove and disprove their theories through their own fact-findings, and experiments. Connections between cooking and science exploring basic microbiology will be introduced.

•Theater/Drama: Instructor/Director /Actress – Stephanie Ferenc Henderson - While children are having lots of fun in Theater they are also learning the valuable skills of self-confidence, public speaking, and teambuilding that will take them far beyond the stage. Children will explore and build their skills in all the elements that make up the theatrical experience; concept, design, character development and performance. Children will develop their skills by doing pantomime and improvisation along with playing theater games. All the world is a stage.
