Notes from Hungry Heron Farm, Waldo - Thanksgiving 2009
Though the darkness is coming on earlier and earlier in the day, still Waldo, Maine teems with activity.
Late Saturday afternoon, Marshall and I up and took a risk on a "Here's Waldo Day" spaghetti dinner at the Waldo town hall, and were we glad we did! I can speak for the lasagna, which was warm and creamy and comforting, just the way lasagna should be (hint: the cook told me not to boil the noodles first). But, the mile high blueberry pie was the glamorous dessert that had everyone talking. The baker promised to make it again next time. (Apparently this community-minded group has an event every month.) I'll be there, and I'll let you know about it in advance, too, so you can come. I'm looking forward to playing ping pong with that young man who gave me such a run for my money.
A drive to Camden on Monday to pick up a case of pink grapefruit at the 7th Day Adventist church was well worth it, too. The citrus fruit gets delivered every month from Florida. For $26 we got 36 sweet, juicy, fruit that I like to peel and eat like an orange. Yum! We split the lot with our friend Jim Rhodes from Belfast. Wouldn't it be great to do a group order from Waldo? An informal citrus delivery co-op!
Monday night, Marshall went to a talk at the red-and-white building (the old shoe factory on field Street in Belfast) on national health care reform and how it will affect us here in Waldo County. He came home swearing about politicians and Wall Street bankers. Glad I stayed home.
The big event this week, though, is Thanksgiving, and we're off to the UU Church of Belfast for a potluck supper. I'm bringing cole slaw, a nice way to eat cabbage, which is cheap and in season. Speaking of cheap, did you notice the price of turkey at Hannaford? 40 cents a pound! At that price we had to buy one. It's thawing in the root cellar for a "Thank Goodness It's Over" dinner party soon after official Turkey Day.
Now, I'm brand new at this, so please help me out by sending me your news at rooted@fairpoint.net. Marshall's right here, telling me Nate Stover just had surgery for carpel tunnel. If you think of it, send some healing thoughts Nate's way. See you next week! I'm looking forward to it.
