More Letters From The Front Line 03/06/2012
Just over a month ago, we posted an article describing the plight of a friend of mine who was having trouble with his divorce. Since that posting there have been over 5000 views and many questions from readers about their own problems with divorce, custody and Guardian ad litems. We will be posting those questions we have been asked with the hope of helping others that maybe having the same issues that my friend has had.
We received a question yesterday from Rose F. in Washington who asked 'How is oversight going to be paid for?' 'Can Maine afford another branch of government for GALs?'
February 24, 2012 there was a meeting in Augusta to see if Maine's legislature should revisit a 2006 report on GAL oversight. The request was turned down and instead it was recommended that Maine's Judicial Committee of the Legislature address the issue to see what if anything can be done.
During this meeting it was pointed out that Maine's Judiciary recognizes the fact that there is a problem with the GAL program but lacks not only the funding but resources to carry out the recommendations from 2006 and 2009. It was also pointed out by the esteemed Senators and Representatives that there is a problem. In other words because of the bad economy there is no money. This is something that I think everyone can appreciate – a tight budget.
The question that one should ask in these tough economic times is whether Maine can afford a Cadillac or is a Chevy more realistic? There are options out there that other states have used – yes the GAL problem is not unique to Maine – that are low cost or no cost. These options when used in other states have been met with huge success. Another big budget program is an easy way to fix a problem. It is not the only way though. With some creative thinking Maine could have a model program that is more user friendly for all involved. In the end is that not what it is all about? Bettering a system for the child or children. Making it easier to understand work within for the parents involved. Having the best Guardians working for the state. If it truly is about the best interest of the children then change will happen and change will come.
Thanks for the question.
