The Rig

The mission of The Rig is to provide a meeting place for local area youth (9 – 12th grades) so that they may develop a connection with themselves, one another, and the community. The Rig is a safe place to pursue new ideas, new friendships and new skills. Members of The Rig will assist with the operation of The Rig and help facilitate community based initiatives.

Our inaugural event was during Christmas by the Sea (2009) in Camden. Over 30 students transformed an art gallery on Bayview Street into a space that was filled with music, conversation, and board and video game playing. All the marketing, planning, fundraising, designing and implementation of the event was done by the kids, with consistent adult guidance when needed. The event was a great success and substantiated the community's support for a permanent home for older teens in down-town Camden.

Being downtown is key to The Rig’s mission. Our older teens would love to be an integral part of the community, with a place to call their own that can serve as a springboard for positive interaction with local businesses, community members and each other. Thanks to a small grant and the tireless efforts of the "Riggers", we moved into our new home at 56A Elm St. (May, 2010).

SInce then we have grown in numbers, offering a safe place for older teens to hang out after school, as well as programs like the popular Movie Night, Open Mic, the  RIg Round Table and our newly initiated Reciprocity Project.
