School assessments: What they mean for you and your child

On Tuesday, January 31, from 6 – 7:30 p.m. at the Rockland Public Library, educator and therapist Randi Stein will discuss how developmental and academic school assessments are administered in public and private schools, and how those results are used to place or support a child. She will discuss how the differing educational goals of public and private schools are reflected in the educational and psychological assessments that are conducted by those schools.  Randi will also speak about the assessments she conducts, and participants will have an opportunity to experience some of the playful and artistic exercises that are part of the "Extra lesson" assessment she has developed.  She will touch on how certain experiences can interrupt normal development, and how these experiences can contribute to the developmental delays that seem to be appearing with more and more frequency in our children.  Participants will be encouraged to share their observations and questions about the classroom experiences of their children, wherever they are being schooled. Time for questions will follow.

Randi Stein is a registered dance/movement therapist (M.A., DMT, Antioch University)) and Waldorf-trained (Association for Healing Education) Resource teacher who has many years of teaching experience in public and private schools in the US, Canada and Israel, as well as in Waldorf Schools in New Hampshire, Maine, and Massachusetts.  She brings her sensibility and keen observation skills as a movement therapist to the developmental and academic assessments she conducts as a consultant, and her program recommendations reflect her deep understanding of movement as a language of expression and communication, and an accessible means for therapeutic support.
