INTERVIEW WITH GRAPHIC ARTIST AND MEMBER OF THE RIG, ABBY JO ULMER
Abby Jo Ulmer is a member of The Rig and a senior at CHRHS. She recently created the poster for The Rig's OPEN MIC coming up on February 25th. Following is a recent interview with Abby:
When did you get interested in Graphic Arts?
I actually wasn't really interested in the Graphic Arts at first. It was kind of a lucky break, really. I signed up for Chris Walker-Spencer's Graphic Design class to fill up my schedule, and then absolutely fell in love with doing graphic design.
What kind of stuff have you done?
I've done a few fun projects on my own, making my own imagery as well as posters for people, and then I also did the class work we were required. Since I'm pretty new at this, I'm trying to find more things to do and explore, but it's definitely something I'm going to continue.
What grade are you in CHRHS and what are you liking about school this year?
I'm a Senior at CHRHS, and I'm liking that I'm coming to a big finish this year and learning a bunch of things I didn't think I'd really be interested in, like graphic design and jewelry.
When did you hear about The Rig?
I heard about The Rig when Andy Schlebecker was first planning it, and it sounded like an amazing idea. I used to be a member and a volunteer at the Teen Center, and Andy's idea for The Rig filled in what we saw at the Teen Center, with not having things to hold the attention of the high schoolers. (Note from The Rig: The Teen Center is a wonderful resource for our community which serves primarily the middle school demographic.)
Do you think The Rig is important? If so, why?
I think the Rig is very important, because it gives teens somewhere to go after school, a positive place, when there are plenty of bad influences in the area. I'm so grateful for everyone who volunteered and still volunteers to keep the Rig going.
