Finns & FriendsThe author is Art Jura. He is a 3rd generation “Mainer”, a photographer, and the grandson of Finnish immigrants. The purpose of “Finns & Friends” is to: (1) Provide information on upcoming events of local Finnish-American organizations. (2) Help with genealogical questions, and the history of Finnish immigration to mid-coast Maine.
Few realize that our local area received the largest proportion of the Finnish immigrants who eventually settled in Maine. Also, this began as early as 1840, peaked through the first half of the 20th century, and still draws visitors with ties to this culture. “Tervetuloa” (Welcome!)

Kids say the darndest thingsAs a mom of three (2 girls and 1 boy) I have a lot of stories to share about my kids and family. I am married and my oldest daughter is 14, my son is 5 and youngest daughter is 3. I can often be found at my oldest daughters sports events (softball, field hockey, and cheering) or following Darik around on the golf course, and T-ball games, all while chasing the three-year-old around. I am the assistant production manager at VillageSoup and when I am not working I can be found taking pictures of the kidz and doing volunteer PR work. I earned my Bachelor's Degree in Business Management at URock this past December. I welcome your opinion and advice, and invite you to share your stories about raising children. E-mail me at 2girlz1boy@gmail.com.

Loose CanonKit Hayden is from away, having moved to Maine from Wisconsin thirteen years ago to escape the liberals. Advancing age has brought increasing bewilderment over the activities of fellow planet-dwellers. Partial relief has been obtained by venting in blogs, most recently with mainecoastnow. Further relief has come from the adoption of Buddhism, which occasionally pops up in his writing. Rest assured, however, that nothing matters. It’s hopeless. Accept that. chaoscmh@gmail.com

On Being a SouthenderSandra Sylvester is a native of Rockland’s South End. Her novel, "The South End," takes place in the neighborhood where she grew up. She has degrees in Education and Communications and has resided in Georgia for many years. She has written articles and stories over the years, but this is her first novel. She visits the South End as often as she can and enjoys sharing old stories with any Southender she comes upon. If you have stories to share, please email her at southendstories@aol.com. The stories I post here come from my memories of growing up in the South End of Rockland, Maine. It has been many years since I left the neighborhood, therefore, my memory may play tricks on me from time to time. My father always told a good story, and every time he told the same story, the facts would change a little. Call it creative editing. I think I inherited some of that trait from him, so if you see facts that aren’t quite correct, please forgive me. I make no apologies because in the end “it makes a good story.” Right? I invite you to email me at the above address with your corrections, additions, or comments about the story I post on that particular day.
